The Industrial Training Fund (popularly known by its acronym, ITF) was established in 1971. The primary goal of the ITF is to stimulate human performance, improve productivity, and induce value-added production in industry and commerce.

In 1973, ITF established The Students Industrial Work Experience Scheme (SIWES) to address the problem of tertiary institution graduates’ lack of appropriate skills for employment in Nigerian industries. The scheme has so far achieved its goal of preparing and exposing students of tertiary institutions for the industrial work situation to be met after graduation.
